If you want the survey or test to be completed within a certain time, or each page of the survey or test have a time limit to complete it, it is worth using the function Completion time limit. It allows you to set a time limit for both the page range and the entire survey. What is more, it is possible to set a limit to be counted for each survey page separately or to be imposed on the entire previously selected range of pages.

This function is especially useful in case of knowledge tests, for example, in competitions, e-learning courses, in schools or universities, because it allows you to define in advance how much time a respondent can spend with one question / page or the entire test.

When there are several questions on the page and the time limit for filling in ends, the answers already given are saved and the next page will be displayed accordingly (if the time limit per page is set) or the survey will be completed (if the time limit for the whole questionnaire is set).

How to set a time limit for the entire questionnaire?

  • After you finish adding survey questions, select Survey Settings in the Create tab.

  • Scroll down to the section: Time limit for completion and check the Set the time limit for completion option.

  • Then, in the Time limit should be applied to, select the Entire questionnaire option, and then decide whether the limit should be calculated for each page of the questionnaire separately or whether the limit is for all pages together. Finally, enter the time limit in seconds, for example, 3600 seconds is 1 hour.
In the case of a limit set for the entire range of pages, it is possible to formulate a message which will be displayed to the respondent after the time specified by the limit is reached.

  • Finally, scroll to the bottom of the page and save the changed survey settings.

How to set a limit for a selected range of pages?

If your questionnaire consists of more than a dozen pages, but only some of them are test questions (the others have, for example, an introduction or an ending), then the time limit for completing the questionnaire should only be imposed on the pages with the test questions and not for the entire questionnaire.

  • After you finish adding survey questions, select Survey Settings in the Settings tab.

  • In the section: Time limit for completion check the Set the time limit for completion option.

  • Then select the Set of pages option, and then from the drop-down lists select the page range on which the limit will be imposed. If the limit is to be calculated for each page separately, in the section: Time limit should be contiuned, select the Against each page separately option. Thanks to this, each page in the selected range will have its own time limit. Finally, enter the required time limit in seconds, for example, 3600 seconds is 1 hour.

  • To save the changes, scroll to the bottom of the page and click: Save.

What is worth remembering?

  • Remember to set the time limit according to the number and complexity of the questions. In the case of open-ended questions, respondents may need more time to formulate their answers than for questions with a given list of answers. It is worth checking such a test before it is fully launched to check if the limits are not too restrictive.
