Full Control Over Responses: New Character Limits for Open-Ended Questions

In online research, precision is key. Sometimes you need a short, specific keyword from a respondent, and other times you’re looking for a comprehensive story or detailed feedback. To help you collect exactly the data you need, we have introduced expanded character limit settings for open-ended questions.

With this feature, you not only manage the volume of data but also make the survey-filling process easier for your respondents.

How does it work?

When creating or editing an Open-Ended Question, you will find the "Response Field" section in the options panel on the right. Your choice of field type now determines the maximum character limit you can set:

1. Single Line of Text (Short Responses)

Ideal for collecting names, email addresses, or short phrases.

  • Maximum Limit: You can set any value up to 2,000 characters.

  • Best Use Case: When you want to ensure conciseness and prevent respondents from pasting entire paragraphs into fields meant for short entries.

2. Multiple Lines of Text (Longer Responses)

Designed for extensive opinions, problem descriptions, or customer stories.

  • Maximum Limit: You can allow the respondent to write a response of up to 20,000 characters.

  • Best Use Case: In NPS surveys (asking for the reason behind a score) or employee satisfaction surveys where freedom of expression is a priority.

Dynamic Counter – Support for the Respondent

From the respondent's perspective, this new feature provides clear guidance. A dynamic character counter (e.g., 0/5000) appears in the bottom right corner of the response field.

Why is this important? The respondent sees in real-time how much space they have left. This allows them to better plan their response and ensures they aren't caught off guard by a text block when trying to submit the survey.

How to Set a Limit in 3 Steps?

  1. Add an Open-Ended Question to your survey.

  2. In the Options section (right side of the screen), select the field type from the dropdown: Single Line of Text or Multiple Lines of Text.

  3. In the Character Limit field, enter your desired value (keeping in mind the 2,000 or 20,000 limits, respectively) and click Save.
